Sandhurst Silver Band is pleased to announce Russ Young as the band’s new Resident Conductor and Musical Director, working alongside Professional Conductor David Johnson ahead of the band’s appearance at the First Section National Finals in September. Russ, who hails from North Yorkshire, joined the Royal Marines Band Service in 1993 and has enjoyed a varied and prestigious career so far, having held the positions of Bandmaster of The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Scotland and The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Collingwood during this time. He was also Chief Instructor at The Royal Marines School of Music and in 2017 returned to the Headquarters Band Service Royal Marines. On his appointment to the band, Russ said:

“I am absolutely delighted to accept this appointment in what has already been a successful year for the band. I very much look forward to continuing the hard work preparing for this year’s National Finals in addition to having a great deal of enjoyment delivering the band’s concert programmes”

Joining Russ at Sandhurst is a brace of new signings and appointments. Steven Williams takes up the seat of Solo Euphonium, having previously had spells in Yorkshire and the North West with Blackburn and Darwen and the now-defunct Pennine Brass. On Solo Baritone comes Kieren Williams, who recently relocated to the area from the East Midlands having previously spent time at Thoresby Colliery and Ratby Co-operative Bands as well as conducting the University of Nottingham Brass Band. The band is also pleased to see Kieren joined by two other University of Nottingham alumni in Sam Holmes on Eb Bass and Andrew Claydon on First Horn. Rachael Albrighton joins on Percussion, whilst the band is very pleased to welcome back Kevin Barker on Solo Cornet, who makes a happy return to the band.

The band’s Chairperson, Gwen Moore, was thrilled with the new additions:

“It’s really exciting to be able to welcome someone with Russ’s experience and ability, and Russ is a perfect fit with the band, proving to be a hit with players and audiences alike. This, along with some fantastic new playing additions and the partnership between Russ and our Professional Conductor David Johnson, makes it an exciting time for Sandhurst, and we can’t wait to represent London & Southern Counties in the National Finals!”
